Every year in the UK approximately 30 people are
killed as a result of coming into contact with
electricity, and hundreds more are seriously
injured. The Health & Safety Executive states that
25% of all reportable electrical
accidents involve portable appliances
- kettles, fridges, toasters, fax machines and
computers - in other words, the appliances you and I
use every day!
The 'Inspection and Testing of In-Service Electrical
equipment' (usually referred to as Portable
appliance testing or PAT), was introduced to enable
companies & organisations comply with the
Electricity at Work Regulations. To meet these
regulations it is necessary to have in place a
program of inspection and electrical safety testing
of portable appliances. Other legislation of
specific relevance to electrical maintenance - The
Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, the Management of
Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the
Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations
1992, and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment
Regulations 1998.
How can we help?
To help businesses
comply with these regulations the electrical
industry has developed a range of tests to a
standard specification.
Testing is carried out using PAT testing equipment,
this ensures that portable appliances are checked by
trained engineers to ensure they comply with the
standard and are safe to use. All of our Portable
appliance testing engineers conform to the code of
practise as set out by the Institute of electrical
engineers. They undergo continuous in house
assessment and training to make sure that they are
fully compliant with the testing regulations and
procedures.
A detailed report is then compiled listing the
status of each appliance, ensuring it is safe for
the purpose for which it was designed.
